Rise FinTech Insights July 2020

Rise FinTech Insights Report front page

Welcome to the July 2020 edition of Rise FinTech Insights, our regular publication on trends and technology in FinTech. In this edition, we discuss the important topic of financial inclusion.

One thing that COVID-19 teaches us, if we needed reminding, is how many people across the world remain disadvantaged by not having access to basic financial services.

It’s a blight that prevents them from transacting for even the most basic goods and services. A simple bank account, for example, can open doors for individuals and families in ways that many of us take for granted. The ability to control payments, make financial decisions and invest in health, education and the future can lead to better lives.

It’s not just a nice-to-have. Without basic financial services, lives can be devastated. In an ever more connected world, it’s a subject that, in one way or another, affects us all.

We hope you find the report interesting and useful.

In this report, Patrick Leonard, Managing Director and Co-Head of emerging FinTech for Barclays International spoke with Chris Britt, Co-Founder and CEO of Chime about the key role of challenger bank models in financial inclusion.

Rise FinTech Insights May 2020

Welcome to the May 2020 edition of the newly renamed Rise FinTech Insights, our regular take on the latest trends, topics, successes and happenings in the world of FinTech.

These are strange and challenging times, but we hope that you, your families and communities are staying safe and well. At Rise, we remain focused on building and maintaining a global community of the best minds in FinTech to disrupt, challenge and confront the way things are done in our industry. This edition of Rise FinTech Insights is part of that effort. We hope you enjoy it and we welcome your feedback.

Right now, maintaining the ability to innovate is especially important to startups and scale-ups, which is why we've focused this edition on Open Banking. This is a technology that presents rich opportunities for FinTechs to uncover the potential in banking data and develop new financial products like funding platforms, supplier payment services, credit checks or insurance.

Now more than ever, people are at the heart of what we do, so you’ll also find another important highlight in this edition: news from our Rise site leads around the world, and how they're helping our communities in these times.

The report was officially launched on Thursday 14 May 2020. To celebrate, we held a virtual launch event, which several contributors from the report attended, including;

  • Mike Smith, Chief Product and Technology Officer, Barclays Ventures - Keynote
  • John Pitts, Policy lead, Plaid - "Building Blocks of Open Banking"
  • Sara Elinson, Principal, Fintech Strategy & Transactions Leader, Ernst & Young LLP - "Open Banking and Regulation"
  • Ed Maslaveckas, CEO, Bud - "Data Sharing"

Q4 2019 Rise FinTech Report

Welcome to the Q4 2019 edition of the Rise FinTech report, our regular take on the latest trends, topics, successes and happenings in the world of FinTech.

In previous editions, we’ve looked at the FinTech scene in London, Israel and New York so this time we’re focusing on Asia, a region of constant innovation driven by China and India, which continue to be the largest FinTech hubs based on investment. Across the region, both consumer interest in startup technology and government support are considerable, making Asia fertile ground for disruptive innovation.

In this edition, we share some 2020 predictions and views from our Rise platform site leads as well as important developments in technology and trends that are impacting FinTech startups and the wider Asian population.

We also have an article by Abhishant Pant, founder of The FinTech Meetup, who has made an epic 25,000 km road trip to identify how advances in financial services and financial inclusion are helping address the needs of a large part of the population across Asia.
